Teaching is one of the primary tasks of the Church. Christ was called and known as “teacher” and “master.” According to the Gospels, teaching filled most of Christ’s time.
The solemnities of the Liturgical Year
According to the ancient tradition of the Church, the maturing of christians in faith takes place through a gradual guidance within the framework of the liturgical year and its solemnities. Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter are structured in a way to guide children and young people into the mysteries of Christianity. Therefore, the preparation and solemn celebration of solemnities are particularly important in the Church and one of the strongest ways to initiate us into faith life.
The Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation
However, the birth and growth of faith takes place in a specially through the sacraments of initiation. These sacraments are Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. For those baptized as children, the Eucharist and Confirmation bring the christian vocation to fullfilment by strengthening and deepening us in the life of grace. The celebration of the sacraments is timed according to the stages of human growth, so that children and young people have the opportunity to become personally aware of the gift of faith and make it their own.
Before receiving the sacraments, children and young people must undergo the preceding instruction. In practice, this takes place through “catechism” instruction in the parish, which is divided into two classes.
First Holy Communion catechism (min. 9 years old)
Before a child receives communion for the first time, they must attend instruction for one school year, which begins in August and usually ends in May. Instruction is every other Saturday at 11:00 AM in our parish premises. Please check the schedule.
Confirmation catechism (min. 14 years old)
The instruction for young people to be confirmed also lasts for one school year, but the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation itself depends on the timing of the Bishop of Helsinki’s visit, when he administers the sacrament. Instruction is every other Saturday at 11:00 AM in our parish premises. Please check the schedule.
