Saint Mary’s Chapel, built at the base of Saana fell, was constructed by the Catholic parishioners of Oulu, who have been traveling to Kilpisjärvi, especially in the summer, to pray for the Virgin Mary’s protection over the Nordic countries.
In 2015, about fifty young people made a pilgrimage to Kilpisjärvi and carried a statue of the Virgin Mary to the top of Saana fell. To protect the statue, they were allowed to build a small shelter on the grounds of a Sami family, at the base of the fell. In the summer of 2022, with their kind permission, a memorial chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was erected next to the shelter.
The space may be used only for Christian prayer. The keys can be found at the reception of Polar Artic Oy.
